If data is absolutely critical and there are no other options at the given time it is not unheard of with companies paying the ransom. If ransomware didn't work, people wouldn't do it

Not sure why there were no backups... Veeam is so easy, just set it and forget it...

Well they are pros so they might already have considered backups and stuff. I think they needed some particular data that hadnt been backed up or something. Thats just an assumption. The real question is, if the files will be back to original state after decrypting it. Many other ransomewares destroyed the file even after paying ransome.
